World Peatlands Day 2025

World Peatlands Day is a timely reminder of the importance of Ireland’s bogs and wetlands.

Peatlands store more carbon than all the world’s forests combined. They support biodiversity, regulate water, reduce flooding, and filter pollution — all while sitting quietly beneath our feet. Yet, many are under pressure from historic and current land use.

This excellent story map from the FarmPEAT project explores Ireland’s agricultural peat soils and how farmers are managing them for nature. It’s a fascinating look at the science, policy, and practical work being done to protect these vital ecosystems.

The FarmPEAT project, which concluded at the end of 2024, was an EIP (European Innovation Partnership) project funded by DAFM and administered by our team. The project demonstrated the successful roll-out of a results-based approach towards incentivising and rewarding farmers for improved management of their peat soils. Important that the learnings from the project inform future agri-environmental policy towards helping Ireland achieve its Climate target of rewetting 80,000h a of peat soils by 2030.

Well worth a scroll this World Peatlands Day!
