Biodiversity in Bloom!

What a Single Unmown Patch Can Do

A casual walking commute in Kenmare this week turned up over 20 species — including a beautiful Common Spotted Orchid — a quiet but striking illustration of what thoughtful land management can achieve.

The sighting came from one of several designated 'Don't Mow, Let It Grow' areas included in the Kenmare Tidy Towns Biodiversity Action Plan. These small patches of unmanaged ground may seem modest, but they can support a surprising range of plant and animal species, providing food and shelter for pollinators and helping wildlife move through the wider landscape.

Biodiversity gains don't always require large-scale intervention. Sometimes it starts with a simple decision not to mow.
